Review: Plantbasedfoods Soya Frankfurters

More sausages, this time soya hot dog sausages, from Ireland based Plantbasedfoods. After reviewing their Veggie Sausages we found these hot dog franks and thought we'd give them a try too. Traditional Frankfurters and Wieners are pretty much the same thing (they may differ in proportions of which dead flesh they use, depending where you are in the world). For vegans, if they're intended for hot dogs, they're the same thing:

These ones come in plastic skins that you hardly notice are there.. so be sure to always read the label, which does make this clear. You have to remove the skins individually before cooking, which is a bit fiddly.

The sausages inside are a lot like many other types of wieners / frankfurters we've tried - smooth skinned and looking a lot like a meaty frankfurter.

The cooking instructions say you can boil, shallow fry, grill or microwave them. We opted for boiling which is quick and simple.

These are excellent hot dog sausages, no doubt about it. They smell and taste like meaty hot dog sausages. They don't have a skin or any snap to the bite, but the texture is smooth and pretty good.

The closest in taste and texture we've reviewed to these are Frys hot dog sausages. The Frys are better value though, and don't use highly processed soya protein isolate (or don't declare it). Nonetheless, if you're looking for authentic tasting hot dogs, these are pretty good.

Verdict: Fine Franks

  1. Fry's uses soya protein - they just do not say "isolated"
Soy protein is a protein that is isolated from soybean. It is made from soybean meal that has been dehulled and defatted.
