[P]review: Buono Ice Cream Mochi

That's right, preview rather than review. We haven't verified that these are even vegetarian yet, but we're pretty sure they are. They're labelled Dairy-Free, but not as vegetarian, and a couple of the ingredients could be from animal fat. Buono make other products with the same ingredients that are labelled as vegetarian, so we're pretty sure this is an oversight. We've reached out to the distributor to establish the facts, and await their reply.

We hope they're kosher, because they're rather good:

UPDATE: These are confirmed as vegetarian, as well as dairy-free (and have no other possible animal ingredients listed) and they therefore meet our review criteria as being vegan.

Yep, we were confident enough that they're vegan to eat them.

The outside pouch of these mochi balls is a thin, soft and sticky rice mochi, about the size of a squashed golf ball. If you love mochi, you'll love these. If you've never had mochi, you might think they're a little strange at first...

The inside is filled with a coconut milk dairy-free ice cream. We opted for chocolate, which was a good choice. This ice cream is smooth and creamy - a bit like Swedish Glace sort of texture. These really are excellent, and we hope they become widely available.

They're on sale at Goodness Direct and also being distributed by them to independent health food shops too.

If this was a review, it would be 5 star. As it's a preview, you can take your chances and decide for yourself...

Those Ingredients:
Coconut milk (32%), water, glucose syrup, modified tapioca starch, sugar, shortening (refined palm oil, refined hydrogenated palm kernel oil, antioxidant: E319, emulsifier: e471, E475), Cocoa powder (2%), Maltodextrin, emulsifier: E471, Stabilizer: E410, E412, E407, Dextrose Monohydrate, salt.

    3. I found the green tea version of these recently in an Asian market here in Barcelona, they were really nice! Again I didn't think until I had eaten them that they didn't define where their fat came from... let us know if you find out from the company :)

    1. Yeah, we need to find the other flavours and do a proper review...our local source had only the chocolate ones. Black Sesame sounds good indeed, and Green Tea too.

    1. They sure are. We've seen the mango and strawberry flavours in our local health food shop, so we'll do a full review shortly.
