Re-Review: Tyne Chease

Tyne Chease

Reformulated and improved artisan vegan cheeses. Now without soy. In our original review of Tyne Chease last year, we had to temper our disappointment that the cheeses weren't as good as we'd hoped they'd be. Ami got in touch last month to offer us the chance to test her new soya-free recipes, and we delightedly accepted!

Review: BlueRisella 'Blue' Cheese

BlueRisella Vegan Blue Cheese

A vegan version of a creamy soft blue cheese, for hot or cold use. BlueRisella is a flavoured version of CreamyRisella, the vegan soft cheese from the makers of MozzaRisella. Rather than mould, it's flavoured with seaweed, in the form of nori and ulva. Does it taste anything like blue cheese?

Review: New Recipe Sheese Slices

Sheese - White Cheddar Style Slices (new recipe)

Sheese has been reformulated, for the better. We were never very fond of the old recipe, with the taste of vinegar and the texture of soap. This new stuff is completely different, and a lot more like Violife, which arrived in the UK last year and changed expectations for vegan cheese:

UK Review: Vegan Gourmet Cheese Shreds

Follow Your Heart - Vegan Gourmet - Cheese Shreds

Follow Your Heart's pre-grated vegan cheese has recently been more widely available in the UK, including in our home town of Nottingham. We grabbed a bag each of the Cheddar and Mozzarella flavours for our review. Is this another US import you should seek out?

Review: Tyne Chease

Tyne Chease vegan cheese

You've heard of Kite Hill and Treeline nut cheeses? Tyne Chease is the UK's version. Having never tried the American cheeses we're not going to compare, but the arrival of Tyne Chease has generated a lot of excitement, so let's see if it's any good. We sampled the Classic and the Garlic & Herb hard cheeses, along with the Soft Macadamia:

New: Violife 'Prosociano' Vegan Parmesan

Violife 'Prosociano' Vegan Parmesan

Out with the shaker, in with the grater! At last, a big wedge of pungent vegan parmesan to grate on your pasta! There have been vegan parmesan substitutes for years, but few in block form, with most sold in shaker pots. The Violife cheese brand is now a firm favourite, so it's only right they should take up the parmesan challenge.

Review: Amisa Vegana Gouda Style Cheese

Organic vegan grated cheese with coconut oil and lupin flour. With Viotros, the Greek cheese maker, now doing contract manufacturing of dairy-free cheese, we're seeing a lot of very similar vegan cheeses on the market. Veganic, Violife, Jeezini and even Field Roast's Chao are all variations on the same product, and Amisa have joined in the fun too:

Review: Parmezzano Vegan Parmesan

Vantastic Foods Parmezzano - vegan parmesan

Another parmesan-in-a-can option for your dairy-free pasta topping. The latest in a growing line of these type of products, this Vantastic one is based on soya flour. We've seen cashew and coconut used in recent alternatives, so this one is one of the more 'conventional' offerings:

Review: Cherub Cheesey Sauce Mix

Cherub Cheesey Sauce Mix

Dairy-free cheese sauce from New Zealand producer Cherub. We reviewed their parmesan shaker back in September, and now this sauce mix has started to hit the shelves of health food shops across the UK. We made up some macaroni cheese to check it out:

Review: Tofutti Minis - 'Better Than Cream Cheese'

Tofutti Minis - 'Better Than Cream Cheese' - Dairy Free Cream Cheese

Mini snack packs of dairy-free and soy-free cream cheese. Based on a protein blend including rice, fava bean and garden pea. This is a six pack of little snack pots, so you can get your dairy-free fix on the go. We picked up the Roasted Red Pepper & Garlic flavour.

Review: Teese Creamy Cheddar Sauce

Teese Creamy Cheddar Sauce - vegan cheese sauce

Pre-packaged cheese sauce, made with dairy-free cheese. Teese is a US brand of vegan cheese that's becoming more widely available in the UK. Teese mozzarella came second in our massive Meltdown cheese taste test last year. This sauce comes in an identical package to the firm cheese - a sort of cheese sausage. Quick mac and cheese is on the menu:

Review: Vegamigo Parmezzo Cheese

Vegamigo Parmezzo Cheese - vegan parmesan dairy-free

Vegan parmesan alternative made with cashews. Dairy-free, soy-free and gluten-free. Pasta sprinkles for vegetarians and vegans. This is now the third brand of grated 'parmesan'-in-a-tub that we've reviewed, after Bellissimo and Parmazano. After soy flour and coconut flour, this time it's ground cashew nuts doing the cheesy thing:

Review: Violife Creamy - Vegan Cream Cheese

Viotros - Violife Creamy - Dairy Free Vegan Cream Cheese

New dairy-free soft cheese from the makers of Violife cheese slices, arriving in a range of flavours. Viotros announced this creamy cheese alternative late last year, but it's only recently landed in UK shops. The cheese comes in five flavours - original, herbs, tomato & basil, cucumber & dill and hot peppers. We snagged the plain and herb versions for our review:

Review: Jeezo Bianco - Vegan Mozzarella

Vegourmet Jeezo Bianco - Vegan Mozzarella Cheese

Vegourmet's rebranded and repackaged block cheese is now called Jeezo, while their cheese slices are called Jeezini. We've took this opportunity to revisit Jeezo, because we've reviewed it previously as part of our Meltdown and Cheeseboard taste tests and we were pretty harsh on it. Read on for why we might have softened our view:

New: Violife Cheese a block

Violife vegan cheese in a block

Your favourite vegan cheese in a 200g block. Violife has only previously been available as slices. This block doesn't even appear on their website as yet, but it's making its way to your local stockist. The block means grated violife is now possible, as well chunky slices and little cubes...whatever takes your fancy.

Review: Ravioriselli Ravioli with MozzaRisella

Review: Ravioriselli Ravioli with MozzaRisella

Egg-free fresh pasta with dairy-free cheese filling. Vegan ravioli made with the best vegan cheese is like a dream come true. When we heard that MozzaRisella were expanding their product line, we couldn't wait to test some of it. The company sent us some review samples of the spinach ravioli and courgette (zucchini) ravioli, both of which have CreamyRisella within:

New: Bellissimo Vegan Parmesan

Bellissimo Vegan Parmesan

Cherub Dairy Free of New Zealand make a parmesan alternative that's now available in the UK. Last year we reviewed a similar product called Parmazano, by Life Free From, but that has since been discontinued. This new Bellissimo product comes in a similar shaker pack and is designed as a cheesy topping for pasta:

Review: Mamma Cucina Dairy-Free Pizza

Mamma Cucina Dairy-Free Margherita Pizza

Vegan margherita pizza with Tofutti mozzarella cheese. Part of Triano Brands (best known for Tofutti), the Mamma Cucina range in the UK now includes dairy-free ice cream, cheesecakes, quiches and pizzas. Just like the quiche and cheesecake, this pizza is also gluten-free. We've tried Tofutti cheese on pizza does this make a worthwhile frozen pizza?

Review: Violife Flavoured Cheeses

Violife Flavoured Cheeses

Vegan cheese with Olives, Peppers, Herbs or Tomato & Basil. Greek cheese masters Viotros were the first to get a 5 star review for a vegan cheese here on Veganoo. Since the original cheese slices launched earlier this year, the range has expanded rapidly. We picked out four of the new flavoured cheeses for our review:

CHEESEBOARD: Vegan Cheese Taste Test

Part 2 of our big vegan cheese review. 11 dairy-free cheeses, one cheeseboard. We've got together 11 brands of vegan cheese on sale in the UK and put them to the Taste Test. In Part 1 of the test, we saw how well they melted, and how they tasted hot. Now we're looking at how they compare when eaten cold.
