More Irish sausages, this time soya based. The company name is a mouthful before you get to the sausages though. We like the sentiment, but it doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. After reviewing Dee's vegan sausages recently, we spotted these very different Irish sausages in a health food store in the UK and thought we'd give the curry flavour ones a try:
These sausages are similar to Taifun's tofu sausages and also like the Mediterranea tofu sausages we reviewed recently too. These ones however, are made with soya protein isolate, which is a highly processed form of soy that we're not used to seeing in vegan sausages. We're not sure why the company went down this route, when the texture (see later) is largely the same as tofu. You can make tofu at home (see here), but try making soya protein isolate at home...
The sausages can be grilled or fried. We opted for the latter, which requires constant attention as you need to keep the sausages moving to stop them sticking to the pan (we didn't use a non-stick pan though...). They do brown up nicely after five minutes or so on a medium heat.
Like many tofu sausages, these ones shrivel a bit once they leave the hot pan and have a few minutes to cool down on the plate.
As well as soya, there is some wheat gluten in these sausages. That helps to give them a slightly more meaty bite than the soya would alone. These are very much tofu style sausages though, with a light, low fat, kind of texture. They're nothing like a faux meat sausage. We have to say that we couldn't taste the curry flavour at all, nor detect any spice, but the flavour was pleasant enough.
These sausages are not widely distributed in the UK, and we can't see a compelling reason why they should be. Vegans are avid readers of ingredients panels and many will prefer to stick to tofu or gluten based sausages from brands they already know. These don't really bring anything new to the table.
Verdict: so-so soy
