Cherub Dairy Free of New Zealand make a parmesan alternative that's now available in the UK. Last year we reviewed a similar product called Parmazano, by Life Free From, but that has since been discontinued. This new Bellissimo product comes in a similar shaker pack and is designed as a cheesy topping for pasta:
While Parmazano was based on soya, Bellissimo's main ingredient is coconut flour, along with sunflower oil and yeast extract. The consistency is very similar, being almost a powder, but this has slightly more body than Parmazano, which helps with it not being as floury. It is slightly fibrous, but you only notice that in testing, and not once it's on a dish.
The flavour is a little bit cheesy, but the overwhelming taste is the salt/sugar combo that is high up on the list of ingredients. That's not necessarily a bad thing, as it does give a burst of flavour on top of your pasta, in the way that parmesan does.
This isn't remotely like parmesan, but it does serve a similar purpose for vegans, so if you're looking for something to perk up your pasta, then give it a try.
