Review: Mamma Cucina Ice Cream

Mamma Cucina Vegan Ice Cream

Dairy-free frozen soya dessert from the Tofutti sister brand, in Vanilla and Strawberry flavours. Vegan ice cream is in every supermarket, and there are now some great non-dairy ice creams like Food Heaven. Mamma Cucina's dairy free range includes cheesecakes, quiches and pizzas, but is their ice cream any good?

We found the Vanilla and Strawberry flavour tubs in a branch of Holland & Barrett, and there is also a chocolate flavour. The tubs are largish at 750ml.

We popped open the vanilla flavour first - every ice cream maker needs to get this one right. Unfortunately this is a really poor dairy-free ice cream. Instead of being smooth and creamy, it's thin and icy. Watery ice cream with crunchy ice crystals is not going to win any awards.

The Strawberry flavour is only marginally better. It's just as thin and icy - much more like a fruit sorbet than an ice cream, but not in a good way. The flavour is pleasant enough, which is a redeeming feature and might help you finish the tub.

We don't recommend this brand. If you want good vegan ice cream, try Booja Booja, Food Heaven or Swedish Glace.

  1. I tried this years ago (used to be Tofutti), I thought it might have improved with age but obviously not. I remember it being like a cross between sorbet and ice cream - not great.

  2. Tofutti can make good ice cream - their Cuties are great. Maybe it's just the smaller amount in a Cutie...?

  3. I found it was h&b's freezers that were the issue. All the ice cream stuff seemed to be refrozen and crystallised

    1. Thanks Plumes. I can well imagine that being the case in this hot weather.

    2. I don't think that's the issue. This used to be sold in Tesco and it was equally awful from there.

  4. I used to get Tofutti in tubs years ago when I visited Sheffield and it was gorgeous - there was a maple and pecan one that was particularly sumptious. I've not seen it since :(
