Review: Whole Plus Hot Pots - Vanilla Spice

Whole Plus - Hot Pots - Vanilla Spice - Vegan Snack Porridge

Vegan snack pot / porridge / instant breakfast - just add hot water. This is a great idea in a sector where many other instant breakfasts have dairy ingredients. Whole Plus make this range of three varieties of Hot Pots in Vanilla Spice, Cinnamon and Chocolate Boost. We got the Vanilla Spice one from Vegan Tuck Box.

The recipe is a base of oatmeal, with fruit (dates and goji berries) and desiccated coconut, all sweetened with maca powder. The milky body is provided by coconut milk powder, and the flavour by vanilla beans and spice.

We were unsure whether we should aim for a stiff or a creamy texture, so we measured out the 180ml of boiling water precisely, as per the instructions. You'd only need to do that once, to know what consistency to aim for in future. You stir for 60 seconds and it's then ready to eat.

The texture is a little grainy, like an undercooked porridge, but that's from the desiccated coconut rather than the oats. The chocolate one should be smoother, as it doesn't include the coconut (except for the coconut milk powder). The flavour is sweet, with a waft of vanilla and a gentle hint of spice.

If you like your porridge piping hot, you might need to be near a microwave as well as a kettle (15 seconds or so). Either that, or scald the mug first.

This is a great way to snack. It's maybe not quite enough for breakfast, but if you find yourself contemplating some biscuits and a bag of crisps, this would be a great alternative.

The Good: Hot, tasty, filling, quick
The Not-so-good: The coconut is quite grainy
