Review: Ombar Coco Mylk

Ombar Coco Mylk Chocolate

Vegan 'milk' chocolate bar made with coconut cream. Produced with organic raw cocoa and bio live cultures. This chocolate bar arrived with the May Vegan Tuck Box and is the first time we've encountered the Ombar brand.

Most faux milk chocolates rely on rice powder in place of milk, but this one tries a different tack. Coconut cream gives the bar a really milky appearance. It's not as firm as rice milk chocolate, but melts more easily - a bit like dairy milk chocolate.

Unfortunately the taste isn't neutral or milky, but strongly coconut. The combination of chocolate and coconut can be heavenly, but here it's almost medicinal. It doesn't work at all and is quite odd. With coconut the dominant flavour, it's difficult to describe the cocoa, but at 58% it isn't bitter.

The Ombar range is extensive and we'd like to try some of the other flavours. It's a pity that this was our first exposure to the brand, because (we'd like to think) it's surely the weakest one in the company's offerings.

  1. I'm quite surprised! I had my first OmBar - Strawberries and Cream - several months ago, and I can say, hands down, that it was the BEST chocolate bar I have ever had, ever. Pre-vegan days inclusive. (And the couple of non-vegan people I shared it with had exactly the same opinion!)

    Maybe try that flavour:p

    1. Will do, Shonalika. Perhaps the Strawberry is a more dominant flavour in that one.

  2. I also wasn't a fan of the Coco Mylk bar both because of the texture and the overwhelming coconut flavour. I reviewed all of the bars on my blog a while back and my favourites were Dark 72 and Açai & Blueberry, maybe those are your best bet!

    1. Thanks Jojo, I've added a link to your review. Looks like we agree on the coconut...
