Organic agave syrups with dairy-free caramel and chocolate flavours. Joining Biona's plain agave syrup on the shelves recently are these pair of flavoured syrups. They're both billed as 'rich and mellow' and aimed at 'pancakes and desserts'. The difference between these and cheap sugar syrups, is that Agave makes up over 80% of the contents in both cases, meaning that they keep their Low GI status:
Despite the Low GI, the Caramel syrup is really sweet...which we like. The caramel flavour is great - rich and toffee like. We drizzled some over hot crumpets and it tasted fantastic. This is a real find and could be a new store cupboard staple - we can imagine all sorts of uses for a great tasting syrup like this.
The chocolate syrup is less successful. The closest thing to this on the market is Choc Shot, which we reviewed last year, which is also a syrup with chocolate added. While Choc Shot is more of a liquid chocolate, this is more of a syrup with a chocolate flavour. It doesn't really work. The other problem is that it's too thick and actually comes out of the squeezy bottle in a square profile and stays like that!
Agave is a great sweetener and it's good to see high quality, low GI syrups like these on the market. The Caramel flavour is a winner, but the chocolate recipe needs some work.
