Review: Biona Large Ravioli (Spinach & Leek)

Biona Large Ravioli (Spinach & Leek)

Enormous egg-free ravioli from Biona Organic. Vegan ravioli are rare, especially large restaurant-sized ones such as these. These look like egg pasta at first glance, so you may have passed them by on the shelf, especially as they aren't even labelled vegan (come on Biona!). That nice yellow colour is in fact just turmeric, but it does make the fresh pasta look appetising:

When Biona say 'large', they mean it. These ravioli are 12cm across (5 inches in old units). You get 6 in a pack, which serves two.

The ravioli take less than 15 minutes to simmer. We're pleased to see they're well sealed and none came apart (this can happen if you make your own!)

Egg-free vegan ravioli

We served ours with a warm tomato vinaigrette, as we didn't want to smother the flavour of the filling. The pasta itself if good, retaining a bit of bite, but the filling is disappointingly bland. Traditionally these might have been filled with ricotta, but that's been replaced with tofu. We love tofu, but everyone knows it needs plenty of seasoning, and that's lacking here. Have they never heard of yeshi/nooch (nutritional yeast)? Even a few more herbs and a bit more salt might have done the trick. Our vinaigrette was much needed to lend a little flavour to this dish.

These ravioli look the part and hold great promise, but will ultimately disappoint. We'd love Biona to tweak the recipe to pack a bit more flavour in, because we'd love to eat vegan ravioli more often!

Verdict: Plain Pasta
