Cheatin' Christmas is here early thanks to vegan favourite Redwood. We're reviewing their festive range of vegan meats, cheeses and pates, starting with their Gammon Style Roast and Sausage and Bacon Style Wraps. The gammon roast is a Christmas special that isn't available for the rest of the year, and the same goes for the wrapped sausages. We put the two together for a Sunday Roast to see if they're a contender for Christmas.
The roast is pre-cooked but to heat and crisp it up requires 45 minutes in the oven (wrapped in foil). Out of the pack it looks like their other roasts...a substantial chunk of juicy wheat protein.
After cooking the outside is crisped and browned but the foil means the juices are kept in. We might suggest oiling the outside before cooking though as it gets a little dry at the edges.
The sausages-in-rashers are also substantial. While skinnier than their regular sausages they're not any shorter and are therefore heftier than those mini chipolatas that flesh eaters have at Christmas.
The sausages only require 30 minutes in the oven (in foil again). They come out browned but not really crispy. The ends tend to dry out just a little, so a brush with oil would be a benefit again.
We also added some Redwood gravy which we've reviewed previously and is really very good. The gammon roast slices well and has a great texture. It's not really much like gammon (from what we remember), but that's not the point - this is just another flavour option for your cruelty free Christmas. That flavour is quite bacony and salty and we like it.
The sausages are also good but not quite as successful. The presentation is undoubtedly part of the deal here and they look great on the plate, but wheat-meat rashers around wheat-meat sausages don't really add anything. Christmas is as much a ritual as anything else though and we like the idea of having something for Christmas dinner that we wouldn't normally have.
