Review: Linda McCartney's Vegan Burgers

Linda McCartney's Vegan Burgers

New branding, new vegan options. Mushroom & Spinach Burgers and Quarter-pounder Vegetarian Burgers. The word 'succulent' appears on the new boxes, but it's a word we've never had cause to use in a vegan burger review until now.

We caught these mid way through the re-packaging exercise, but it nicely contrasts the old branding with the new (improved, but less distinctive). We found it harder to track down the newly vegan quarter-pounders than the more common mushroom burgers, but we put that down to the rollout taking time to happen.

Grilling from frozen is the recommended cooking route (broiling for US readers). They cook pretty quickly and this retains the moisture. The burgers look quite distinctive once cooked, with a meaty appearance for the quarter-pounders and quite an odd green appearance for the ones with spinach in.

Linda McCartney's Mushroom & Spinach Burgers

Once cooked though, it's the Mushroom & Spinach burgers that shine. With 34% mushroom content, these burgers are super juicy, and super tasty. We'd definitely go along with the succulent label in this case. These burgers are just as good as the Sojade burgers which are are our previous best-rated.

Linda McCartney's Vegetarian Quarter-pounder Burgers

The quarter-pounders are a little less exciting. They're very good, they're meaty and tasty too, but they lack the juiciness that would elevate them above other veggie burgers. They're very robust though, and would probably work well on a well-oiled barbecue.

Round Up

Succulent vegan burgers - you don't hear that too often. We suggest you give both burgers a try, but we recommend the Mushroom & Spinach burgers especially. Get yourself some sesame buns, some Violife cheese slices, a dab of burger relish, and you've got yourself a classic juicy hamburger.

  1. The quarter pounders are infinitely better if oven cooked for 20 minutes, then you can actually see the juices on them, they are amazing!

  2. I'm obsessed with the quarter pounders. I gave my brother one and it freaked him out - and he still eats beef. He described it as "meatier than meat"...

Unhappily, the company's "pulled pork" burgers have honey in them. I've emailed to ask them to swap it out... a long shot? If enough vegans ask maybe they will?

  3. How do you cook them Lisa, out of interest?

Can't do any harm pressuring the company for more vegan stuff.

    1. Just under the grill. I have a tendency to overcook everything - but I generally find that Linda McCartney products need a few minutes more than the box advises.
