Review: CoYo Ice Cream

CoYo Coconut Milk Ice Cream

Coconut-milk ice cream in raw chocolate, vanilla & nutmeg, and sticky date & tamarind flavours. Dairy-free ice cream that's also soya free. If you love CoYo yoghurts (and who doesn't), you'll welcome the arrival of their ice cream. It's got some interesting flavour options:

This is premium vegan ice cream and comes at a price - around 7 quid for a 500ml tub. It's free from dairy, gluten, soya, nuts and egg though. As well as the three flavours we picked up, there's also a 'Natural' flavour, which we guess tastes just of coconut. One thing we found is that the textures vary between the flavours...

Sticky Date & Tamarind

The Sticky Date & Tamarind flavour is the standout one. It's fantastically toffee-like, rich and creamy. The tamarind (sweet and sour) is just a background note, with coconut and date being prominent. We love this flavour.

Vanilla & Nutmeg
Vanilla and Nutmeg is such a good combination that we're surprised it hasn't made it to ice cream until now. The amount of nutmeg is judged perfectly to make this something other than 'plain vanilla'.  The nutmeg helps the coconut background flavour blend with the vanilla too. It really is very good.

Raw Chocolate

We had problems with the raw chocolate flavour. If you've ever experimented with coconut oil in your recipes you'll know how temperamental it is...it's either liquid or solid, with nothing in between. The CoYo chocolate ice cream was rock solid, and when scooped, it came out in 'crumbs' that wouldn't hold together. We had to let it get really melty to get a scoop to hold together and get it in a cone.

Once in there, it tasted pretty good. It's a very different take on chocolate ice cream, with a dark earthy raw chocolate flavour. It's different, but we liked it. If only it was scoop-able!

Round Up

Choice is good, and the arrival of CoYo ice cream means there is one more dairy-free option in the freezer cabinet. These are just the sort of interesting flavours we've been looking for too!

The Good: Excellent new flavour combinations
The Not-so-Good: Chocolate flavour is a bit hard and powdery

  1. well, i have been vegan for 8 months now and i feel i am eating a significantly more healthy diet than in the 17 years of vegetarianism that preceded my conversion...pretty sure that products like this will eventually tempt me to start eating all the bad, sugary stuff again...atm the price tag puts me off. presently my only sinful excursion is a pack of choc chip hobnobs which you guys pointed out was kosher! (is that the right word?!) - thanks for the good review - jason

    1. Yeah, we've adopted 'kosher' for our own purposes. Glad to hear you're healthier but allow yourself some ice cream!
