Vegan Christmas: Ikea Tangkorn Vegan Caviar

Ikea Tangkorn Vegan Caviar

Impress your party guests with vegan canapés topped with faux caviar. Ikea is not the first place you'd think of for vegan food, but they have occasional gems in their food shop. This 'seaweed topping' sits next to the cod roe on the shelf, but the display label clearly indicates that this is a 'pure vegetarian' alternative to caviar. What do you do with it though?

Thanks to the food colouring Carbon Black, this stuff is as black as night. We've had to brighten these photos so you can actually see the stuff.

Having never eaten caviar, we're at a loss to explain how authentic this alternative tastes. It's actually quite firm, almost crunchy to the bite. The flavour is mostly a kind of salty seawater taste with a hint of seaweed.

Vegan Caviar

It goes well with cream cheese (we used Tofutti, as Sheese is too strong a flavour to compete with) and really does look great. The flavour is subtle and you need to put a big dollop on to get anything out of it.

Vegan caviar is not the most versatile of products and we really see it as a bit of a novelty for vegan get-togethers. It tastes fine and looks good, but you probably won't be putting it on your essential Christmas shopping list.

Verdict: The Black Pearls
