Smoked vegan hot dog sausages made from tofu. We're working our way through all the brands of vegan hot dog sausages available in the UK. Taifun's Wieners are one of the longest on the scene, pre-dating Frys, Viana, Vegusto, Plantbasedfoods and maybe even Redwood (VBites). Taifun's smoked tofu won our tofu Taste Test, but does 76% tofu make a good wiener?
You get four in a pack, the sausages have no casings to remove, and you can boil or fry them. At 23cm long (9 inches in old measures), these are the longest veggie wieners on the market and will stick out of the end of any bun you put them in.
We chose to fry our sausages this time, for one reason only: we're pretty sure that these are the wieners that The Mighty Fork use in their excellent hot dogs - and they fry theirs.
We couldn't quite replicate the Mighty Fork experience, without the sloppy toppings (those that necessitate the use of the fork). This is a pretty good sausage for a hot dog though - firm, but soft to the bite, with a mild smokey flavour. They don't taste like meaty hot dogs, like say the Fry's ones or the Plantbasedfoods' ones, but they're an excellent natural/organic/unprocessed choice. There's no soy protein isolate ingredients for instance, just organic tofu.
There's still one or two more vegan dogs to seek out and review, and we'll award our Top Dog once we've sampled them all.
Taifun Wieners are available in Waitrose and in independent health food stores
Verdict: Wieners that ain't weenie.

These are insanely good! I don't live close to my nearest Waitrose so when I go I stock up
ReplyDeleteJust finished my first tofu-wiener. I'm a convert. Two thumbs up!
ReplyDeleteI get these with my Ocodo shop, so glad I found them, honestly no one can tell they are tofu, a winner and pleased to know I can still have a dirty dog now I'm veggie.
