Chocolate and Peanut Butter ice cream shell topping from Reese's - the peanut butter cup makers. Vegans have to get their peanut butter cups from elsewhere, but Reese's Shell topping is dairy-free. You can top off your favourite dairy-free ice cream with this intriguing flavour shell:
Chocolate and peanut butter are a fantastic combination, but a combo that works on the contrast between salty and sweet, nutty and creamy. The peanut here is actually just peanut oil, and is far less successful when just blended in with the chocolate.
The shell topping works perfectly - although you may need to warm the bottle in hot water to get it shakeable before serving. Once on the ice cream it sets very quickly and creates a lovely glossy shell. We don't think the flavour works though - despite our deepest wishes that it would. The peanut oil tastes toasty and salty, but somehow the magic just isn't there.
We actually preferred the Askey's Crackin' topping we reviewed recently, which is just a chocolate topping.
We bought our Reese's Shell from the US imports section of a large Tesco
Verdict: 'Nut' quite as good as it sounds
