Review: Jus-Rol Croissants

Jus-Rol Croissants

Freshly baked vegan croissants...popped from a tube in the fridge. It's very hard to find vegan croissants, in fact this is the only option we know about, other than to make them yourself. This way is far quicker of course...the tube lasts for about 2 months in the fridge, and once there, you're only ever 15 minutes away from fresh crispy croissants:

The tube has a pull tab and pops open almost instantly to reveal a rolled up dough, which is very squidgy and a little bit yellow from the vegetable margarine in the recipe.

The dough unrolls to reveal six tear-off triangles which you pull to separate. You then roll each one up from the shortest side of the triangle towards the point.

A quick curl of the ends to form the crescent shape and then a brush with soya milk to give them a lovely glaze. It's best to brush under the pointy end of the dough which has a tendency to spring up in the oven.

12-15 minutes later and you have 6 golden brown croissants and a kitchen smelling of heaven.... more of a pastry smell than bread.

They need 5 minutes to cool down before being firm enough to cut, The inside is also golden and has a sort of airy bread texture. The outside is crisp and flaky.

Jus-Rol Vegan Croissants

Served 'buttered' with jam they make a fine breakfast treat. They're not quite as big as the supermarket ones so you can eat a couple (or more) in one go.

Vegan Croissants and dairy-free hot chocolate

We also tried dunking them in sweet hot chocolate, which was really rather good. This could become a breakfast of choice...

These croissants are good rather than great, but considering they come from a tube we think they're awesome. Especially as they make vegan croissants accessible to all.

Verdict: Cracking Croissants

  1. I know of a couple other vegan croissant options, but not nationally available. They have them at Eighth Day in Manchester and there's a bakery in Hebden Bridge that sells them too.

I was excited when I first discovered those cans but although it's good to know they exist I don't like them much now.

  2. I really like the Jusrol croissants, they are equally good with sweet or savoury fillings. My favourites are cheezly & pesto or chocolate spread.

  3. 10 years ago I used to buy the Pillsbury Doughboy version and they were delicious I've just made and eaten the just rol croissants and I was very disappointed. No taste, no texture, absolutely horrible. I should have been warned by the endless list of plastic ingredients. I would say avoid at all costs.

  4. Is lactic acid vegan though? I thought it was from cow's milk? I've been looking everywhere for vegan croissants!
