Review: Redwood Mini Sausages, Kofta Bites

Redwood Pork Style Mini Sausages, Redwood Kofta Style Bites

Hot party food...mini pork style sausages and spicy meat/veg bites. Redwood's large range now includes a whole lot of snack sized offerings which can be eaten hot or cold. Despite the thaw in the weather, we prefer hot food at this time of year. We've already reviewed the mini-sausages wrapped in 'bacon', but these sausages are the bare version.

Hot vegan sausages sizzling in a pan

The obligatory shot of sausages sizzling in a pan...plenty of oil is best, and you can always drain them on kitchen towel once they're browned off. These sausages are great...we've bought them a few times since we originally took these photos for our review. The one problem we have with them is that you need to fry them... they have no instructions for oven cooking. We tried them in the oven and they dried out, so we can see why Redwood recommend frying, but maybe a brush with oil and wrapping in foil might do the trick for those averse to washing frying pans.

Sizzling hot vegan party food

The Kofta bites are good, but not something we'd go out of our way to buy again. These just need a quick grill, but it's very easy to burn them. They're like a meaty version of an onion bhaji... which is another way of saying they're a vegan version of a kofta (oniony) meatball. They have soya protein for meatiness, but they're not meaty like sausages, as they have plenty of onion and spinach in there. They're mildy spiced in flavour terms and mildy spicy in heat terms. The Kofta bites are best eaten hot as they're pretty dull eaten cold.

You won't disappoint party guests if you whip these out of the kitchen mid-party, served hot. The sausages are moreish and will disappear fast. Make yourself a nice minty yoghurt dip and the kofta bites will be popular too.

Verdict: Sound bites for a party

  1. mmm, those mini sausages look so good. Speaking of yoghurt... do you know of a good one that isn't sweetened? We like Alpro, but even the plain one is far too sweet for savoury dishes.

  2. We've just made some unsweetened yoghurt using rejuvelac as the culture to unsweetened soya milk. You can make yoghurt pretty easily with a spoonful of live yoghurt - in soya milk - we usually recommend adding sugar to help the culturing, but it does work without. Have at look at plantfoods.org

  3. If you mix a few tablespoons of provamel plain yoghurt with a teaspoon or two of colemans mint sauce, you can make a really nice mint yoghurt dip which works well with indian starters (bhajis, samosas & pakoras etc), as well as these koftas.
