Review: Lima Seitan Pieces...Bottled Seitan

What have the Belgians ever done for us? Well they've certainly made seitan much more accessible...by putting it in a jar. You can make your own seitan...in a couple of hours, or you can buy chilled seitan...but what if you want it in the store cupboard, ready to go? Lima has the long life solution you're looking for. These large jars are sold across Europe for seitan worshippers everywhere:

Seitan comes in all manner of shapes and sizes, and this seitan looks a lot like chunks of stewing steak. The pieces are large and angular, so you'll probably want to cut it up further before you use it. The texture is very firm, quite rubbery and more than a little chewy...just how we like it. The flavour straight from the jar is not bad...this is seasoned seitan and the liquid in the jar is also flavoured with soy sauce. There's a little garlic, onion, ginger and soy in there already...classic macrobiotic seitan flavourings.

For our review we sliced the seitan thinly and crisped it up a bit in some hot oil and soy sauce, adding some stir-fried vegetables too. The seitan absorbs the oil which is a good thing for juicy texture and flavour...or a bad thing if you're watching your fat intake. You could always add the seitan at the end of cooking to lessen the oil take up.

This is excellent seitan and we love the idea of having this stuff in the cupboard ready for when we need it. If you're outside a big city, chances are you won't be able to buy seitan very easily...and making your own needs some advanced planning.

Verdict: Champion chewy chow
