Vegan Camping Food: Wayfarer Review

Wayfarer camping food, vegan ready meals

It's camping season...the mosquitos are feeding, and hungry vegans are too. If you're travelling light, but you want to take more than some dried TVP in your backpack, then Wayfarer's pouches might be the answer. The boil-in-the bag ready meals come in lots of varieties, of which the vegetable curry and the spicy vegetable rigatoni are animal-free. The advantage over tinned food is not so much the weight, as the convenience of the tough but malleable pouch shape...and no washing up....

The best thing about these pouches is that because you boil them in water, the pan stays clean. You can even use the water to wash up your utensils at the end. We wouldn't recommend using the water for hot drinks though, as the outside layers of the foiled plastic pouch made not be food safe. Remarkably, the pouch edges are cool to the touch the moment you lift it out of the water, so tearing off the top strip doesn't burn your hands. You can eat the meals straight from the pouch if you're really travelling light.

vegan rigatoni camping food

The rigatoni is a thick, hearty affair with soft pasta, vegetables and a gloopy tomato sauce. It's not haute cuisine, but after a long trek you'll appreciate something hot, tasty and filling prepared in so little time. It's got plenty of flavour and is mildly spicy.

The curry is pretty similar with a tomato based sauce, but with potatoes and beans rather than pasta and is a little more satisfying. Quite similar in flavour to canned vegetable soup (Heinz style) but with curry spice and a little chilli heat.

Both of these ready meals are something we can recommend. They're convenient, tasty, and pretty filling if you pair them with some extra carbs...pitta bread travels pretty well. With a very long shelf life you can keep them stashed in a cupboard ready for those spur of the moment urges to get outdoors.

Verdict: Great outdoors food
