Review: Shire Snax Fruit & Nut Bars

Scottish independent producer of gluten-free, wheat-free, & dairy-free raw snacks that are low in sugar. The Edinburgh company is run by Aaron and Mitch (Michelle), and they got in touch to offer us the chance to try some samples of their wares.

They sent us six different flavour bars, Peppermint Patty, Boggy Sunshine, Bolly-Good, Green Dragon, Aloha, and Jaffa the Hutt. All the bars have a base of 30-40% dates, plus one or two types of nuts such as cashew, almond or pecan.

Beyond that, the ingredients vary by the bar. There are no artificial flavourings, and each bar is flavoured with natural ingredients and extracts. Despite the similar ingredients, the bars have very distinct flavours.

Shire Snax Fruit & Nut Bars are Vegan

Our favourite was a surprise to us, as mint shouldn't work in a fruit & nut bar, but the Peppermint Patty combines it with cocoa, for a mint-choc flavour that really works. The Aloha (pineapple, macadamia) and the Bolly-Good (ginger, cardamon, cinnamon) were also firm favourites.

Boggy Sunshine and Jaffa the Hutt are both pleasantly orange flavoured bars. The Green Dragon has green matcha and vanilla, but we thought it could have been more strongly flavoured.

The texture of these bars is a lot like Nakd bars, with a soft bite, but a little bit of texture from the nuts. The flavours are very different from Nakd bars though, and we love the imagination that's gone into making them all so distinct.
