Review: Madécasse Chocolate

Madécasse Vegan Chocolate

New chocolate brands come and go, but rarely do we say oh! this is good! This chocolate is Fair Trade with a difference - they don't just buy fair-trade cocoa, but also make the chocolate over there too. The Brooklyn based company makes all of its chocolate in Madagascar, employing over 200 people. Of their 6 product lines, only 1 isn't vegan.

We picked up three flavours of the Madécasse chocolate in Waitrose, namely the Sea Salt & Nibs, the Toasted Coconut and the Salted Almond.

The Sea Salt & Nibs is the finest of the three, and the one that has the wow factor. It's not just the tangy sea salt, but the fruity cocoa nibs too, in a really great smooth dark chocolate. It's delicious and moreish. You really do have to try this chocolate!

The toasted coconut is also very good. Sometimes chocolate and coconut are blissful bedfellows, and other times they clash horribly. Thankfully, this is the former, and with the added bonus of the toasted flavour thrown in too. It's unfamiliar, but instantly likeable.

The Salted Almond got us excited, but was the disappointing one of the three. The salt didn't get our tongues tingling, and the almond was a little bland. It really needs the almond to be caramelised, to turn it into 'salted caramel almond'. It's nice enough, but it could be so much better.

Round Up

It's great to see that these are proper dark chocolate bars, without the added dairy fat that gets stuffed into certain European brands like Lindt. We love what they're doing on the bean-to-bar production side too. What's best though, is that they've created some really excellent tasting chocolate bars along the way. Pick some up when you're near a Waitrose.

The Good: Fair trade, fair made, fantastic
