Review: Amy's Kitchen Breakfast Sandwich

Amy's Kitchen Vegan Breakfast Sandwich

Vegan egg and sausage muffin. Egg-free, dairy-free, gluten-free. Frozen and ready to microwave for an instant hot breakfast. The marketing team at Amy's sent us a few of these to check out and they were snatched up gleefully! There really is nothing else like this on the market at the moment:

We've included a photo of the cooking instructions below. There are microwave and oven heating methods, taking 5 minutes for the former and 45 minutes for the latter. We could have tested the oven method, but we think it will be used so rarely as to be irrelevant. This is an instant hot breakfast, so who's going to wait that long for it?...

Amy's Kitchen Vegan Hot Breakfast Sandwich

Five minutes in the microwave, and that frozen package is transformed into a piping hot sandwich. We had the benefit of more than one sample, so we made some fine tweaks to the cooking. To avoid a soggy bun you need to open the packaging as soon as it's cooked. The 1 minute standing time is then enough for the surface of the bread to dry off. The other tweak is to turn the sandwich over once during cooking, to avoid a chewy bottom.

The result is pretty amazing for something made without meat, egg or even wheat. The gluten-free bun is not bad at all (although we'd prefer a wheat version for a softer texture). The tofu-egg omelette layer is great - well seasoned and tasty. The sausage patty was also pretty good, considering it doesn't use wheat-gluten. The sandwich comes with ketchup on, but it's best to add another good dollop.

There will always be compromise when companies make things gluten-free as well as vegan. Amy's Kitchen is primarily a freefrom producer. They make gluten-free stuff that isn't vegan, but they don't do vegan stuff with wheat or gluten. This sandwich isn't perfect, but we think it's fantastic for what it is. Just 5 years ago it would be hard to even comprehend a product like this on the market.

Amy's Kitchen Breakfast Sandwiches are available in larger Tesco stores, and we hope to see them elsewhere too in the near future. Instant sausage and egg muffins are the stuff our hungry vegan dreams are made of.

The Good: Quick, hot, tasty breakfast
The Not-so-Good: The buns can get a little soggy

  2. For me it was a rather average experience, yes amazing that we have products like this now but could be better. This has been my least favourite from Amy's range. I also feel it was tiny for the price.

  3. I think I would add a slice of Daiya cheese!
