Review: Vegamigo Parmezzo Cheese

Vegamigo Parmezzo Cheese - vegan parmesan dairy-free

Vegan parmesan alternative made with cashews. Dairy-free, soy-free and gluten-free. Pasta sprinkles for vegetarians and vegans. This is now the third brand of grated 'parmesan'-in-a-tub that we've reviewed, after Bellissimo and Parmazano. After soy flour and coconut flour, this time it's ground cashew nuts doing the cheesy thing:

The cashews are not finely ground, but have a little bit of texture and crunch. The cashews provide the body for this cheese, but it's our old friend nutritional yeast (nooch/yeshi) that provides the flavour. Salt is the only other ingredient.

If you're thinking 'Hey, I could make this stuff at home in 5 minutes', you'd be right.

As with Parmazano and Bellissimo, this stuff is nothing at all like parmesan. What it does do, is provide an alternative that does a similar job. If you're looking for a cheesy/salty topping for your pasta, this will do just fine.

The cashews can't really be tasted, so the dominant flavour is the yeast and salt. It's possibly a bit too salty, but then you'll use very little of it. It's not unpleasant, but don't feed it to your non-vegan friends!

The Good: Simple, salty, tasty
The Not-so-good: It's just yeast and salt...

  1. What kind of places sell these vegan parmesans? I looked in a health food shop today and couldn't see any. (They'd also sold out of spray cream - most disappointing!)

    1. We bought ours online from Alternative Stores. Hopefully they will get a distributor.
