Review: Vegemite

Vegemite is vegan

In honour of Nottingham being full of Australians for the Ashes Test last week, we thought we'd review Vegemite. There aren't many Aussie vegan things we could think of besides Vegemite (any thoughts?). You'll either love or hate Marmite, but have you even tried Vegemite?

This stuff is basically yeast extract, just like marmite, but it does taste differently. It's blacker and a little thicker and does have a bit more of a 'vegetable stock' kind of flavour, thanks to onion and celery according to the label.

Just like marmite though, it's strong and salty and will divide opinion. We really like it, but it's not sufficiently different to Marmite to seek it out specially. We found ours in Sainsburys, and it's fairly widely stocked if you want to give it a try.

Vegemite is officially vegan according to the Kraft website:

  1. I buy the Sainsbury or Tesco own brand. Being a Kraft product would put me off - look what they did to Cadbury!

    1. There is that. There are a number of 'wholefood' versions too from Meridian and the like.
