Pre-marinated tofu with mild curry and sweet mango. Taifun make the world's greatest tofu, and they also won our tofu taste test. This is an unsmoked tofu, that's been marinated in lime juice, mango, curry spices, garlic and white wine vinegar. Marinated tofu has been in the shops for years, so is this more of the same?
The Germans have a love affair with curry that's quite unlike the British affection for a balti after the pub. Currywurst (curried sausage) and other curried meaty dishes are sold at every Imbiss (snack kiosk). This curried tofu has to be seen in that context - it's something very obvious for the Germans, but has less immediate appeal in the UK.
The tofu is crumblier than one of the smoked blocks that Taifun produce. It's got 5% mango pieces in there, along with chopped ginger and coarsely chopped herbs. The mango, crystallised ginger and the brown sugar all serve to make this tofu very sweet. The curry isn't at all spicy, and registers only as a mild seasoning, with barely a kick.
So what do you do with sweet, mild, curry-flavoured tofu? It's nice on its own, or maybe in a salad, but we think the flavours would be lost in anything else.
