Review: The Raw Chocolate Co chocolate berries

Organic vegan dried fruits covered in raw chocolate.

Appearances can be deceptive. Some vegan foods can look quite 'worthy', and that was our first thought on opening up these packs of dried fruits. These various berries are covered in chocolate and then dusted in cocoa, but they do look like a bit like animal droppings. Luckily for us, they actually taste fantastic:

The Raw Chocolate Company provided these products for us to review, so it's also lucky we like them. It's always difficult for vegan blogs to give unbiased reviews because a bad review means you won't be on the mailing list next time... No problem this time around, as these are some of the best chocolate fruits we've tried. Talk about ticking all the right boxes too...these berries are vegan approved, raw, fair-trade (2 of the 3), organic (2 of the 3) and they're also 74% cocoa.

Raw Chocolate Raisins
The chocolate covered raisins are plump, sweet, soft and delicious. If you're a chocolate raisin lover these will be heaven to you. There is no hint of bitterness even with the 74% cocoa content. You'll want to put these on a high shelf once you've grabbed a handful...or you'll find yourself munching through the whole packet in one go!

Raw Chocolate Mulberries
Plump but a little firmer than the raisins, and a little less sweet. The mulberries are slightly larger than the raisins and give a little more to chew on. Mulberries are high in vitamins, antioxidants and anthocyanins....little health bombs masquerading as delicious choccies. The mulberries come in an attractive gift pack...perfect for the approaching season of giving.

Raw Chocolate Goji Berries
Goji berries are quite hard and dry, but intensely sweet once you chew them to release the flavour. The high cocoa coating gives another bittersweet level to this complex taste. These are more of a grown-up sort of treat, but are our favourite of the three we tried. The goji berries remind us of dried wild apricots, which are similarly hard and dry but intensely rewarding when you give them a good chew.

There aren't many high quality chocolate fruits on the market, especially ones that are vegan and ethically made. It's a pleasure then to recommend them on the grounds of their great taste alone. These packs are by no means cheap, but they do earn their place at the premium end of the chocolate market.

Verdict: Berry good chocolates

UPDATE: We've also reviewed the raw chocolate bars from this producer.
