Review: Smart Fries..air popped potato sticks

For UK readers these are crisps rather than chips...and for US readers these are chips rather than fries. Now that's out of the way, on with the review. With "80% less fat than regular potato chips" according to the pack, these potato sticks claim to be healthier than your usual potato-based snack. They're air-popped, which we guess means they're not deep fried...

The pack size is 28g (1 oz) which is about the same as your average pack of Walkers....but they do feel bigger. We figure the air-popping has a big advantage in volume terms if nothing else. These bags feel like sharing bags you'd take on a picnic.

The Garlic & Rosemary flavour is 'bold'. We got that word from the packet, but we think it's a good description of the strong flavour. We don't think you could polish off a pack to yourself in one go without being knocked over by the flavour. We like them, but in small quantities. We should say by way of comparison, these crisps are a lot like a fatter version of Walkers' French Fries.

The Jalapeño flavour gets translated as 'Spicy Chilli' on the UK ingredients stickers, and spicy is the right word. Eat more than a handful of these and you'll be reaching for a bottle of Corona. The spice heat is at the hot end of the spectrum...at least for potato chips. They're also pretty tasty though and once you've got your cold beer you'll be reaching in for more.

Smart or not, these are pretty good crisps. Bold flavours, crispy texture and pretty moreish.

Verdict: 'Stick' some in your picnic basket
