Review: Taiko Vegan Sushi at Waitrose

Vegan Review: Taiko Vegetable Sushi at Waitrose

Many vegetarian sushi sets have egg in so it's great to see a vegan option at Waitrose. The small vegetarian sushi set from Taiko Sushi (exclusive to Waitrose) is currently egg free...but check before you buy as these things change all the time. Waitrose are even selling pots of salted edamame with their sushi range now....if you fancy a salty lunchtime hit. Is their vegan sushi good enough for your midday sushi fix though?

The set is well presented and neat, and our hopes are high as this set includes inari zushi...tofu bean bags. The inari is a good addition as the fillings are all vegetable in the maki rolls...so the tofu provides a bit of protein. The inari is good...chewy but not too chewy and with a nice fried flavour. The maki rolls are good too...the nori seaweed isn't too stretchy so you can bite through it. The fillings of kanpyo gourd, cucumber and yellow pepper are ok...nothing too exciting but fresh and tasty.

On the side you have the obligatory soy sauce, pickled ginger and wasabi...all great tasting too.

We'd like to see a wider range of vegan sushi on offer...non-traditional fillings like avocado and asparagus make really distinctive maki rolls, but at least for the moment you can pick up vegan sushi anywhere you can find a Waitrose.

Verdict: Bean bags of flavour
