Review: Happy Kitchen Chocolate Brownies

Happy Kitchen Chocolate Brownies gluten-free vegan

Gluten Free, Egg Free, Dairy Free and Sugar Free is always going to be a tough call for a brownie recipe, but the folks at Happy Kitchen in London Fields have risen to the challenge. The resulting vegan brownies are available in 4 flavours - original chocolate, raspberry, pecan and chocolate orange. We opted for the original chocolate brownie to see if this 'decadent wholefood' was more decadent or just more wholefood...

Photographing these things was a challenge as they're almost jet black...the shot above taken in full sunlight illuminates the dense chewy insides of the brownies.

To say these brownies have almost nothing in common with your average brownie is an understatement, but they're surprisingly brownie-like in texture...like a moist, fudgy, chewy cake. You get a lot of variation in traditional brownie textures and these are at the dense 'chocolate torte' end of the brownie spectrum. There is plenty of cocoa in the flavour for chocolate lovers and a little bit of fruitiness. You do get a tiny bit of grittiness from the rice flour like in many gluten-free recipes.

We wouldn't pitch these brownies as decadent to your average brownie eater, but if you're looking for a guilt-free vegan option at the wholefood end of the scale, these are surprisingly good.
