Review: Le Conserve della Nonna Green Pesto

Le Conserve della Nonna - vegan green pesto

Yet another vegan pesto, but one of the better ones. This time it's the turn of another genuinely Italian brand Le Conserve della Nonna. The company is a 'free from' outfit offering pasta sauces and ragus, bread spreads and conserves, which appear to be all vegan as well as gluten free.

This green pesto is widely available in UK supermarkets so we thought we'd add it to our review list:

It's quite a thick pesto rather than one which is an oil slick, and very flavoursome too. Nothing too odd in the mix means you can feed it to non-vegans without them noticing anything strange. If you want, you could always add a dash of olive oil to make this pesto go further and thin it down a little.

We do wish companies would use olive oil in their pesto recipes though, as it's tastier and healthier than sunflower oil. At least this pesto actually has pine nuts in it instead of cashews, and it also has a good bit of garlic too. The only odd thing in the ingredients list is 'natural basil flavouring' - this stuff is 39% basil so it shouldn't need it!

Round Up

We're still looking for a vegan pesto with these four ingredients: Olive oil + basil + garlic + pine nuts. If you know of one, do let us know and we'll be happy to review yet more pesto!

Do look out for Le Conserve della Nonna products though, including their Green Pesto. As we said, it's a decent mainstream pesto, and is widely available. We'll keep an eye out for the company's other products too.

    1. Wow that looks pukka, but should be at that price. Cashews can lend cheesiness which is fine alongside pine nuts.
