Review: Morrisons Free From Millionaires Shortbread

New recipe caramel shortbread, with gluten-free base and faux milk chocolate topping. We reviewed Morrisons previous version of this shortbread last year and came away unimpressed. The new recipe was mentioned in the comments section of our old review, so we sought out the new version to see if it's any better:

The all important caramel layer at least looks like caramel now, unlike the beige gunk of the previous recipe. The shape and packaging has also changed substantially, and although you get the same four pieces, they're now slightly smaller.

Breaking a piece in half, the illusion of the caramel layer begins to fall apart a little - it starts to look more like fondant than caramel. There is no creaminess to this caramel, and little luxury, just sugar and sweetness. The flavour is OK - vanilla and toffee, but the texture could be better.

The gluten-free shortbread is ok, but tastes far too much of coconut. In fact the coconut flavour is so strong that it overpowers the vanilla/toffee of the caramel which is a big mistake.

The chocolate layer is good, but too thin for a luxury cake slice like this.

This is a better millionaires shortbread than Morrisons offered last year, but it still needs some work. It's quite a sweet tasting, pleasant coconutty cake, but that's not what it's billed as.

The Good: Better caramel, good chocolate

The Not-So-Good: Caramel needs creaminess, coconut flavour is too strong

  1. Interested to know your views on the Lazy Day version which I saw in Sainsbury's yesterday. We aren't a vegan household but they do come round occasionally so the reviews are important!

    2. Not sure I agree. The biscuit part of lazy day is horrible.
