Vegan hot dog sausages. Mild smoked wiener/frankfurter style sausages from German firm Viana. We're making sure we've covered all of the vegan hot dog options out there (see below). After reviewing the Irish Plantbasedfoods hot dogs last week we're reviewing these Viana ones which have been on the market for a couple of years.
You get 5 in a pack, which is unusual in this market - it's usually 4. These sausages look really good, with a deep red colour that makes you want to pick one up and bite it. That red (tomato) colour and the oil around the sausages can get everywhere as you open the pack though...
You can boil or fry these sausages - it's 4 minutes in the pan either way. We chose to boil on this occasion. There are no tricky plastic casings on the sausages, but you do boil in the bag, which is unusual.
These are far from the best hot dog sausages we've tried. They're too firm for hot dogs - too meaty and too chewy. Hot dogs are fast food - quick to prepare and quick to eat with soft sausages. These ones though, take more time to chew and get through. The flavour is also on the strong side, with more than a hint of wheat gluten and a definite smoky taste.

Sounds like you overcooked them. I boil out of the bag for just a minute or two and they are juicy, not too chewy and I think one of the tastiest around (I ignore the instructions obviously)! These are my go to hotdog!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the input. You can't be alone as these sell pretty well. Everyone's idea of a perfect hot dog is probably a little different.
