Review: Dee's Vegan Sausages

Serendipity + Vegfest = Opportunity to try sausages not widely available in the UK. We happened to be in the right place at the right time to be one of the lucky few to get a Vegfest handout of Dee's vegan sausages. Dee's is an Irish wholefood company run by Dee Collins, specialising in healthy burgers, sausages and meal pots. We've been wanting to try these sausages for ages... and fate intervened last Sunday. Are they worth the wait?

These are like no other vegan sausages. For one, they come with skins and arrive as a string of uncut sausages.... looking utterly like a string of porkers.  Second, they're not made with soya OR gluten, but with pea protein. The casings are made from rice flour and seaweed, although the packaging is a bit vague and people might think they're plastic and remove them (don't!).

The sausages can be fried, oven-baked or grilled (broiled), with the latter being the recommended suggestion. We tried out frying as well as grilling, and you do get very different results. The fried sausages give you a sos-mix kind of texture, as the skins dissolve into the sausages. Grilling them though - you get crispy sausage skins!

This is the first crispy vegan sausage we've ever had. If you've been vegan a long time, you may have even forgotten about crispy sausage skins. This experience of a firm and crispy skin, yielding to a meaty inner is simply divine.

The texture of the sausage filling is quite meaty, but very open-textured. There would be room for a lot of juicy fat in there if Dee wasn't so concerned with your health. Apart from wishing they were slightly more juicy, these have an excellent texture. The flavour is great too - lots of ground pepper and a good 'traditional' sausage taste.

We recently crowned a sausage champion in our reviews, but that was for a very German style of sausage - boiled bockwurst. Dee's vegan sausages are much more like a British or Irish banger, but with a healthy twist. We have a new champion sausage.

Verdict: Deeeeeee-licious
