Review: Everfresh Bakery Fig & Orange Cake

Long-life organic fruit cake. Buying vegan cake off the shelf is still difficult...you can't do it in most supermarkets for instance. When cakes are vegan, they're often gluten-free too, which doesn't appeal to everybody. This range of cakes from Everfresh Natural Foods has gluten-free options, but most of the range is wheatflour based:

The cakes come in a range of flavours including banana, carrot & raisin, date & pecan, and this one, which is fig & orange. The shelf life of these cakes is extraordinary - about a year. That means you can have one in the store cupboard for 'emergency' cake requirements.

Not being gluten-free is a big advantage to the texture. They're pretty dense and heavy, but are not dry or gritty like a gluten-free cake. We found the taste and texture to be rather pleasant for something that's been in the cupboard for weeks.

These cakes double up as a tea loaf too. You can toast and butter a slice to really bring out the fruitiness.  The flavours really come alive when eaten like this.

All in, we were pleasantly surprised how good this cake is, for something with no added sugar and such a long shelf life.

Verdict: It's only long life if you can resist eating it!

  3. Yes, i did. It was lovely and sweet, but not overly so. So fruity. Went out today and had to buy another one, because as you said, it is only long life if you can resist eating it!
