Dairy-Free naan bread from Scottish producer Mrs Unis. It's hard to find vegan naan (or nan) bread, as the recipe usually includes yoghurt in some form. Tesco 'Light Choices' mini naans are vegan, but they're not great, so it's good to find some authentic ones:
We found these in a Pakistani supermarket (Pak Foods if you're in Nottingham). They only had the plain naans in stock, so we couldn't tell if their garlic and coriander version is also dairy-free.
Like most packaged naan breads, the recommended way to reheat them is to sprinkle them with water and warm them in the oven.
These are good naan breads, with a soft puffy middle and a tasty chewy outside. They make an excellent alternative to rice to accompany your veggie curry. They're much nicer than the Tesco naans too...
Check out this other product that Mrs Unis makes... Veggie Haggis Samosas...
(we don't know if they're vegan...)

ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteThanks for this review - but the Tesco light choices naans have recently had milk added to them so are no longer vegan. Which makes this product even more appealing! Thought you might want to know :-)
Oh, bad news nonetheless. Thanks for the info - we'll update the post.
DeleteI've been very happy with Newbury Phillips naan, bought wholesale from Suma (I run a buying group for my local Transition initiative) http://sumawholesale.com/index.php/catalogsearch/result/index/?q=bt004|bt005&mode=list
ReplyDeleteFunnily enough, we had these last week in Devon but ours seemed to be a bit stale. We'll look out for them again.
