Meat-free 4oz steaks from German firm Viana. These are slightly spicy wheat/soy protein patties of 105g (4oz) each. You get two in a pack. They can be pan-fried or cooked in the oven, or even on the barbecue. We served some up with french fries and petits pois for a vegan steak-frites:
The steaks are pre-cooked and only really need heating through. Oven cooking for 10 minutes is the quickest and easiest way to prepare them, but they can also be fried for 5 minutes or warmed on the barbecue.
These steaks look really good - the appearance is juicy and meaty, with a red-brown colour and a rough formed shape. Each patty is unique in shape.
The taste is reasonably good, with a slightly spicy seasoning. The balance of gluten and soy means neither dominates. The texture is disappointing though - this isn't fake meat like some of the new stuff in the US (Beyond Meat), but rather a minced-beef sort of texture. What sets this apart from a burger patty is that it's firmer and chewier. It isn't juicy however, and we found these steaks rather dry.
Maybe served with a little sauce though, they'd make a good alternative from your usual veggie burger.

I think the Bonanza Veggie Steaks are delicious and I have them for Christmas lunch every year. They are lovely with cranberry or port and lemon sauce and can be cut into strips for wraps with a sauce. Also I actually like the texture, it's nice and firm when cooked through.
ReplyDeleteYeah a sauce would help. Port and lemon sounds good.
