German Vegan: Chocolate Coconut / Rum Truffle Bites

Berggold Kokos Flocken and Streusel Kugeln chocolates

Kokos Flocken and Streusel Kugeln chocolates from Berggold of Germany. That roughly translates as 'coconut flakes' and 'sprinkle balls'. German supermarkets and drugstores are always stocked with cheap chocolates like these, and luckily they hardly ever use milk chocolate. The coconut ones are basically Bounty bites, while the sprinkle balls are a sort of rum truffle:

The chocolates are loose in a plastic tray and you get lots in a pack. The rum balls have a strong aroma that hits you in the face when you open up the wrapper.

The rum balls are good but not great, being slightly too over-flavoured. The truffle texture is good and the chocolate sprinkles lend a nice crunch, but the rum flavouring is just too much and a little bit false.

The bounty bites are really good though - soft moist coconut, with a sweet plain chocolate coating. The chocolate is not as thick as on a Bounty bar and so doesn't have that crunch, but we're not complaining.  We really wish you could buy these in the UK.... those Organica 'golden coconut' bars are pricey (and a bit dry) in comparison.

If you know someone going to Germany, it's well worth asking them to pick you some of the coconut ones up, from places like Edeka, Penny Markt or Schlecker.

Here are the ingredients panel from the packs we reviewed (sorry..all German, but don't worry, they're vegan).
