Review: Huji Food Ready-to-Eat Tofu

Huji Food Ready-to-Eat Tofu (various flavours)

A selection of Chinese tofu strips, semi-dried, seasoned and ready-to-eat. You can find these packs of meaty tofu strips in Chinese supermarkets. They're long life and don't need refrigeration and so are a useful cupboard standby for a quick stir-fry. The four flavours on offer are spicy, pickled chilli, hot and barbecue.

The four flavours are distinct if eaten straight from the pack, but once cooked with garlic, soy sauce and whatever else you add to your wok, we find these all taste pretty much the same. What is distinct however, is the texture of these tofu strips compared to other types of tofu - they're tough, meaty and chewy. The flavours of the tofu are strong, but not robust enough to contribute much to a dish.

The pickled chilli flavour is sliced more randomly than the neat strips of the other three flavours, and we think this actually improves the texture a little. If you're into meaty, chewy textures though, you'll probably enjoy these leathery lovelies.

Verdict: Chewy Chow

  1. Nice find, although do you know what the 'flavourings' contains? Any indication in the packet or from suppliers that these are vegan?

    Thanks

  2. Not likely you'll find stuff from China labeled vegan. We think it's unlikely there is meat or dairy in the flavourings, but of course we can't guarantee it.
