Review: Shambhu's Cheesecakes

Another one from our #WMVF haul...vegan cheesecake from Shambhu's. We've been waiting a while to get our hands on these so we were glad to see them on the One Earth Shop's stall. There are three flavours available - mixed berry, choc orange and mint-choc chip. We picked up the mixed berry initially...intending to go back for the others:

The cheesecakes are well packaged and presented with smart colourful lids. On opening, the cheesecakes also look enticing, but our hopes were dashed with the first mouthful...on encountering an unmistakeable smack of Sheese. We quickly grabbed the ingredients panel and could see that they've used commercial vegan cream cheese in the recipe, and we've matched the ingredients to this

Now we don't think Creamy Sheese is a terrible product, it's sort of OK on crackers and savoury things...but it's terrible in cheesecake. Bute Island use the same universal flavouring in Creamy Sheese as they do in their Sheese blocks...a sort of tangy hard-cheese taste. You wouldn't put hard cheese in a cheesecake, and we wouldn't put Sheese of any variety in a cheesecake.

Needless to say, we never went back for the mint-choc or orange-choc cheesecakes...

The bases of these cheesecakes are gluten-free and are not bad at all.

Verdict: Skip Dessert
