Profile: ShakeAway Milkshake Bars

Billed as the 'World's Largest Milkshake Bar Company', ShakeAway has branches across the UK and a handful in Australia and other countries. What makes this milkshake chain different though, is not their size but their extensive vegan menu.

Walk into any branch and you'll find a huge menu of milkshakes on the wall, and in big letters at the top they promote their vegan friendliness. Some branches also pin up their vegan list, while others have it on the counter.

The vegan list is pretty extensive running to 30 or 40 options and includes jelly tots, bourbon biscuits, peanut butter and polo mints amongst the more obvious fruit options. We found the staff really friendly and helpful in showing us the choices too.

We went for the mocha option and peered over the counter to watch it being made. The branches keep a special blender for vegans (marker-penned in big letters..). The soya milk used was Alpro and the non-dairy ice cream was soya based but we couldn't see any branding.

The mocha milkshake was really good. Thick and creamy and with loads of flavour. We've also tried their jelly tot milkshake which was incredibly sweet thanks to the pulverised jelly tots, but also really good. The shakes aren't cheap and they do charge extra for the vegan option, but as an indulgent treat they're well worth it.

  1. I used to get peanut butter milkshakes in Shakeaway in Dublin, made with vanilla Swedish Glace, gorgeous! :)
