Review: Vegetarian Caviar Club Seaweed Pearls

Vegetarian Caviar Club - Gourmet Seaweed Pearls

Red and black vegan caviar, or 'vegan pearls of deliciousness' as the company bills them. These gourmet seaweed pearls are a vegan alternative to caviar (fish roe) and are equally as versatile as a garnish or topping. The company sent us these jars to review.

You may have sampled Vegetarian Caviar Club seaweed pearls if you went to London Vegfest this year, or like us you may have been unable to get there in the crush.

Vegan Caviar

The red pearls are larger than the black, and thanks to natural paprika are a rather vibrant orange-red too. The difference in taste is less pronounced though and you'd struggle to tell the difference between them.

Both red and black are strongly flavoured as you'd expect. The flavour is salty seaweed. We have no idea if that's what caviar tastes like.

This is the second time we've reviewed vegan caviar, with the first being Ikea's Tangkorn. The Ikea product has smaller pearls and is only available in black.

Round Up

Vegan caviar makes an attractive topping and is great for party food, canapés and sushi. You could also use it to top rice or to pep up a salad. We simply tried it with some vegan cream cheese on crisp bread, which was rather nice.

The company is releasing a wasabi flavoured version shortly.

You can buy Vegetarian Caviar Club Seaweed Pearls online or at specialist retailers
