Review: Vantastic Veggie King Prawns

Vegan shrimps made of nothing but yam powder? Convincing taste, texture and appearance... that's what it says on the pack. Our haul from Veganz yielded a few interesting things, but none caught our eye as much as these things. Vegan king prawns can't work, can they?

Authentic appearance? We'll give them that - they do look like shrimps, and even have paprika colouring to enhance the effect of a skin. They're really solid when raw, like pencil eraser texture..

Vegan King Prawns / Shrimps

We didn't have a barbecue to hand in Berlin, so we whacked these under the grill with a drizzle of oil. The cooked appearance is pretty good too - they certainly look appetising. That's where our enthusiasm ends abruptly...

Theses prawns have the texture of a bath mat and the taste of a hot water bottle. There's nothing at all in terms of flavour, literally, they taste of nothing. No fishiness, not even any herbyness. The texture is just squelchy rubber. How Vantastic can claim authenticity of taste and texture is beyond words.

If you visit Veganz...try something else...maybe the Vegan Whole Turkey... just don't waste your money on these!

The Good: They look great
The Not-so-Good: They taste of nothing, nothing at all...

  1. I cannot fathom why anyone would ever want to eat seafood anyway - it is ALL the most disgusting things I have ever seen. So I'm not too saddened that the vegan alternative is gross too!

    1. Agreed, but that's partly squeamishness about eating little animals. Chunks of yam don't carry the same association...

  2. I don't like these (I've never enjoyed anything from the sea), but they are really popular in my shop! People LOVE them and say they taste just like the real thing!! Perhaps it is people who haven't eaten seafood in a long time, but if they are happy, that's all that matters :) The texture is quite rubbery though.
