Christmas Cake: Kuchenmeister Cranberry Stollen

Vegan Christmas Stollen

Vegan stollen all the way from Germany. Kuchenmeister supply their christmas wares throughout Europe and as far away as the States and Australia. At least one of their offerings for the UK this year is animal-free: the Cranberry Stollen with Marzipan. Beware of similar ones in Sainsburys by the same company - those contain egg. We bought ours from an independent deli, but you may find these in branches of Aldi too.

If you've guessed that this is 'long-life' stollen, you're right. Ours has a best-before date of the end of January. Christmas fruit cake is known to keep well, but we're not quite so sure about stollen, which is less rich and more bread-like. It's disappointing to say that this stollen already tastes a little stale and dry, when it should be fresh and moist. It cuts well, and the marzipan is nice and soft, but overall the stollen lacks any life.

We're bound to say that the lack of eggs and milk isn't a factor in the below-standard nature of this particular stollen, but we think Kuchenmeister need to do a little work on enriching the loaf to travel better. Even the cranberries fail to liven up this loaf. These imported stollens are quite expensive, particularly in the US, judging by the prices on Amazon... so be warned before you buy this one.

Let us know if you find a better vegan stollen elsewhere.

Verdict: Stodgy Stollen

  2. You can try a local Trader Joe's. The marzipanstollen cakes there are the best!
