Review: Teese Creamy Cheddar Sauce

Teese Creamy Cheddar Sauce - vegan cheese sauce

Pre-packaged cheese sauce, made with dairy-free cheese. Teese is a US brand of vegan cheese that's becoming more widely available in the UK. Teese mozzarella came second in our massive Meltdown cheese taste test last year. This sauce comes in an identical package to the firm cheese - a sort of cheese sausage. Quick mac and cheese is on the menu:

Out of the pack, the sauce is a bit lumpy and quite tangerine coloured. Cold, it tastes strong and salty, but that flavour's going to be spread out in the cooked dish.

We recently reviewed Amy's frozen mac and cheese, and found it quite cloying. It's difficult to get dairy-free sauces to perform well from pan to plate - you generally have to make them quite thin, as they thicken up quickly as they cool.

The Teese sauce performs really well though - once melted in the pan it goes silky and stays that way.  We tested some after 20 minutes and it was still saucy. Eventually, after about 30 minutes (once cold) it firms up. The sauce isn't cloying at all on the pasta, but is a nice thick and creamy texture.

The taste of the Teese sauce is pretty good. It's quite similar to Cheezly in flavour, with a mild cheddar flavour and hint of nutritional yeast.

The one downside of this sauce is the price. It's a US import, and the cost reflects that, with a retail price of over £6. That's very expensive for a cheap dish like mac and cheese.

The Good: Excellent texture and flavour
The Not-so-good: Far too expensive
