Great Balls of Soya. Redwood Meatballs review

If you're looking for a hearty meal there's nothing more filling than meatballs. Redwood's meat free meatballs come in a king size pack too and don't have a serving size indicated...but there's enough for 3 or 4 servings in the pack. The meatballs are based on soya rather than gluten as we had anticipated. We cooked them up with spaghetti and tomato sauce to see how they tasted.

There are around 24 meatballs in the pack and they're about the size of falafel...in fact you could mistake them for falafel. These meatballs don't need much cooking...they can be grilled (broiled) for 5 minutes or cooked in the oven for 10. We opted for grilling to avoid the recommendation to brush the balls with oil before cooking in the oven.

Once cooked, the meatballs have a crispy outside and a moist chewy inside. They're pretty fragile and even stirring them into a tomato sauce will break a few apart, so be gentle with them. The taste is meaty but not strongly, with a good onion flavour and a mild hint of spice.

We made a tomato, onion and garlic sauce to go with them and reduced it before adding it to the meatballs, but you could try the traditional way of reducing the sauce with the meatballs in it, which might make them softer. We enjoyed the meatballs firm and still crispy though with our spaghetti.

These are pretty good vegan meatballs. They could be slightly more moist, but as a low fat option they're as good as meat-free meatballs get.

Verdict: Great Balls of Soya
