Award-Winning Lincolnshire Plum Loaf from Welbourne's Bakery. Apparently this has been made to the same recipe since 1896... except for changing the lard to vegetable fat for vegans and vegetarians. In honour of the recipe change we thought we'd review the plum bread to see what makes it so special:
Lincolnshire plum bread is traditionally made at Christmas, but you can find it year round in bakeries across the county. Recipes vary by family and by bakery, some with eggs (boo) and some without (yay), but it should always have yeast in... or it's a cake rather than a bread. It doesn't have plums in though - plum is an old word that meant any type of dried fruit.
What makes this one so special is the amount of fruit in it. The currants and sultanas are 40% of the loaf and it's rich and heavy with the sticky plump fruitiness as a result. There are no spices in this this loaf, which is perhaps another reason it gets the Special label rather than the traditional plum bread label.
The loaf is traditionally sliced, buttered and served with cheese, but to admire its flavour we just buttered it with a bit of Vitalite and served it on its own with tea. It's got a firm tea-loaf texture, that obvious fruitiness and a just a little treacle flavour too. Really very good.
Verdict: Special
